The Joan Dress

Sew Over It

Check out this beautiful vintage 1960s inspired fitted, sexy, yet classy dressmaking pattern by London’s Sew Over It!

Created for the intermediate sewist with experience inserting an invisible zip and attaching sleeves, the Joan Dress sewing pattern offers a fitted bodice and skirt that gives the dress a sassy, feminine feel. The bodice is fitted with darts at the waist and back shoulder, and features a gently scooped neckline. Stylish ¾ length sleeves and a 60s inspired tie collar give the dress a super elegant feel. Designed to hit below the knee, the skirt is semi-fitted with darts and sports a kick pleat at the back hem. The whole dress is fully lined, giving you a gorgeously professional-feeling finish.

You can create you own lovely Joan Dress in sizes 8 to 20.

Size 8:  Bust 33″ (84cm)   Waist 26″ (66cm)   Hip 36″ (91.5cm)

Size 20:  Bust 45″ (114.5cm)  Waist 38″ (96.5cm)  Hip 48″ (122cm)

Sew Over It recommends a variety of medium weight woven, drapey fabrics with some structure – nothing too fluid or lightweight.  Lightweight wools and suiting fabrics work well for the cooler months, while heavier weight crepes would do for a springy or summery Joan Dress.  For the lining Sew Over It recommend rayon, a lightweight crepe de chine or acetate.

Based on the wardrobe the iconic Joan Holloway from the television show Mad Men, the Joan Dress should be a staple in the wardrobe of any vintage lover.  Its beautiful, tailored look is screaming out for an upswept ‘do, bright red lippy and a classic cat eye eyeliner!  Feminine but fierce!

Sew Over It is the brainchild of lovely Londoner Lisa Comfort.  She has been sewing since age 11 and studied at the London College of Fashion.  Talented Lisa also is the author of 2 fantastic sewing books.  In order to spread her passion for sewing and hoping to inspire people to take up the craft, she started Sew Over It in 2011.  Lisa and her team offer a variety of brilliant sewing classes for all sewing levels in their London shops in Clapham and Islington.
